Disclaimer: About This Blog

THIS BLOG IS: my personal journey of how I am rethinking some of my spiritual beliefs.
THIS BLOG IS NOT: intended to point fingers at people who I think are wrong.
I do not believe the final judgement will be based on how many correct answers we get on a theology exam. I believe many people throughout history have had genuine relationships with God, despite holding questionable beliefs and practices. I make no claim to having it all figured out or being your judge. If we end up disagreeing over these topics I pray we can find a way to demonstrate grace.

Word Study on Word Of God

When Christian's talk about the Word of God do we know what we are even referring to? I think the phrase is usually used to refer to the 66 books we have in our Bible. But is that how the phrase is even used in the Bible?

For example, I think it is common to read verses like this:

Ephesians 6:17 (NIV)
"Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
To mean something like this: "...use the Bible in spiritual warfare, it is the sword of the Spirit"

Or this:

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
To mean something like this "The Bible is living and active... " and again the sword analogy.

But take a look for yourself. Does the Bible use the phrase "word of God" to refer to itself? If not what could it refer to?

Here are all the verses that have the phrase "word of God" in them (All quotes from NIV translation).

1 Kings 12:22
But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:

1 Chronicles 17:3
That night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

Proverbs 30:5
"Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Matthew 15:4-6
For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' he is not to 'honor his father' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Mark 7:13
Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.

Jon,

Thanks for the list. Some friends and I were talking about this very subject last night. I think we'd also have to look at phrases like "word of the Lord" and "word of truth" as well as simply the word "word" occasionally. But, your list speaks for itself.

Thanks Alan, I was thinking the same, I have two more posts queued with more verses, it was too much for one post.

I'd love to hear a bit of your conversation on this. I tried to have a conversation with someone about this, but they just thought I was playing with words...
